They have no one…

“They Have No One To Discuss Such Questions With…”

By Bhupendra Gurung

I would like to thank God and Engage for providing me the opportunity to teach the students at Ghorahi, Dang. Though I could not complete all the teaching sessions due to falling sick, I had an opportunity to complete 2 days of teaching sessions, during which I covered Bible study of the book of Colossians 1-3, and two theological sessions on “Perseverance and Assurance”. I also briefly introduced to the class the ‘what’ and ‘how’ of preaching and preparing a sermon, and also explained how  to share one’s testimony in a systematic way.

Three things I would like to highlight from my trip to Ghorahi.

1. God is at work

The enthusiasm of the students to learn from the word of God, who were all pastors, leaders, deacons and elders of the church and were from the nooks and crannies of Nepal, throws some light to anybody’s mind that God is meticulously at work in Nepal. God is working in and through people’s hearts in Nepal to reveal his outmost plans and purposes for the church and for the people of Nepal – giving them a heart to learn from his word.

2. God wants to equip his people.

It was a privilege for me to teach such students who were sent by God and were passionate to learn and be equipped from his unfailing word. God is really concerned about his people and wants to equip them to make them his instrument for spreading the good news (Acts 9:15), being his ambassador (2 Cor. 5:20), which is the great commission given by Jesus to his disciples (Matthew 28:16-20).

The mission that Engage is doing in Nepal (teaching ministry) is very important for the Nepalese Christian because we still lack basic Christian knowledge and a firm foundational Christian doctrine. Since Nepal opened its border to the West and eventually for the gospel only in 1950, Nepalese Christians (generally speaking) do not know much about Christian theology and its significance in the life of a Christian – but are in the process of learning. Though Christianity in Nepal is still a minority religion, the good thing is, it is one of the fastest-growing churches in all Asia. But growing and equipping should go hand in hand. It is like two sides of a same coin. Equipping leaders and pastors is really helpful for spreading the good news. God wants to multiply the growth of Christians in Nepal, and this is possible through equipping the pastors and leaders, who will eventually equip their churches.

The teaching subjects that Mr. Wilson provided me were really helpful and indeed became helpful for the students to equip themselves. The very first day in the class, when I introduced a theological question stating, “Can we lose our salvation?” relating to the “Perseverance and Assurance” topic, the students were very enthusiastic to learn from it. They told me after the class that they had never been introduced to such a topic. Also, they told me that though they have questions like that they had no one to speak up and discuss such questions with. Together with this, the Bible studies, teaching briefly the ‘what’ and ‘how’ of preaching, group presentation and so on, all of these have really helped in equipping the students.

3. God wants to spread his gospel

Finally, God wants to spread his gospel to every corner of Nepal. A powerful medium to spread the gospel is through one’s personal testimony on how God healed him/her or how God changed his/her life. The students that I met in Ghorahi were all full of such testimonies and were very excited to go back to their home town and teach what they have learned from the classes. Seeing and experiencing that deep down in my heart, I really felt that God is at work, and he wants to equip his people to spread his good news so that every Nepalese person may live and have eternal life in him (John 3:16).

Thanks!
